Surf Diffs

Post by fweddy »

I have a 1992 V6 Petrol Surf and I discovered it has a LSD in the rear of it. I'm selling the vehicle and bought a 1994 3 liter Diesel Surf.

Are the gear ratios the same between the Petrol and Diesel Surfs? Can I swap the diff heads over easy enough? I figure it is easier to swap heads than whole diffs?

Or what's the best way to check ratios to be sure? Jack it up and spin wheels and count turns of the driveshaft??
Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

check the axle code which is located on the fire wall. do a online search and it will tell you the diff ratios.

as above check you axle code, from memory if it ends in a 5 then it has an lsd in the rear. Chances are your new truck is 4.3 ratio lsd in the rear like most other 1kz surfs. Is it auto or manual?

Generally KZN-130 surfs (3 ltr Turbo Diesel Auto ) are 4.1
Code will be G294 = 4 spider open or G295 = LSD

A 4.3 would be G28 4 or 5

not sure about manuals.

wow learn something new every day, i thought only the v6's came out 4.1. All the 1kz auto's I have seen were 4.3 with lsd. Is it slugish with 4.1's? Sorry a bit off topic i know.

Na the diesel spins one wheel and the petrol churns shingle with both. Noticed the difference on the road side ditch the other day and on river bed gravel.

Just checked codes

Petrol G145
Diesel G294

G145
G= 8"
14=4.875
5=4 Pinions LSD

G294
G= 8"
29=4.100
4=4 Pinions

So the theory is the ratios are different! and the Diesel has a open diff.

Petrol & Diesel are definately different ratio due the them revving to different speeds.For this same reason the auto's are slightly different to allow the to change gear at differnt revs.(different valving).
Not so sure about the LSD tho as have seen both 4 spider & LSD in diesels.
May of been a factory option (SSR-X (4 spider) , SSR-V (LSD)) but this may only relate to interior trim.

Its interesting, I tested both these trucks from a standstill. There are three points along the road (hedge 1, hedge 2, and culvet) which we use to compare different vehicles. Both of these were identical. The pertol seems more lazy, but in reality it gets to 95kph at exactly the same point as the diesel that feels more lively.
